The f-stop

The f-stop is a useful concept, but it causes a lot of confusion. It doesn’t help that it’s used to measure seemingly unrelated things, such as shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation, ISO sensitivity and equipment ratings. So what on earth is going on?

A straightforward explanation of the f-stop

We use f-stops to measure a change in light. The key thing to remember is:

Increase anything by 1 f-stop and twice as much light is recorded.

Decrease anything by 1 f-stop and half as much light is recorded.

The f-stop is well suited to modern photography because it measures the change in light rather than the absolute amount of light. We don’t actually care about the absolute amount of light, because the camera’s computer has already measured it and told us what it thinks the exposure should be. If we’re concerned with exposure it is only to say “No, give me a bit more/less light than that.”

Lesson 1 started today and we have two weeks to do the assignments. I have already read this course but will be rereading lesson 1 tonight!

These are two pics i took with it. Ignore Aurora grotty face i was to excited to clean her up before taking them.

I feel more and more confused by the day. So i am going to take a step back and do it one step at a time. I am going to focus on each part of the exposure triangle separately. Research then and then hopefully put it all together!

Depth of Field Definition

Depth of field is the distance between the nearest and furthest parts of a subject that can be imaged with acceptably sharp detail at one focus setting of the lens.

Depth of field refers to the section of a photograph that appears to be in sharp focus.

When an object is in focus, everything from a certain distance in front of the object to a certain distance behind the object will also be in reasonably sharp focus. This distance from front to back that will be in reasonably sharp focus is called the depth of field.

Hyperfocal Distance Definition

The hyperfocal distance is the point you focus on when you want to maximize the amount of depth of field in a photograph. I am happy with the way these pics turned out. I adjusted them ever so slightly in LR2. A smige of vibrance and blacks with a tiny vinagette – and thats it!
